After a full life Jean M. David passed on February 15, 2022, at the age of 96. She was born on December
16, 1925, to Frank and Marie (Buchinski) Swierczak. Loving wife of the late George David, Jean is
survived by her son Jeff David (Dianne) of Indianapolis, daughter Linda Casey (Don) of Concord, CA, and
4 grandchildren, Kris Tapper, Sharon DeCaro, Jessica David, and Dan David.
Jean grew up in East Chicago and was valedictorian of her class at Washington High School. She
attended the Vogue School of Design in Chicago where she excelled at fashion design, winning the
Chicago Tribune design contest.
At 21 she met and fell in love with her beloved George, marrying him in 1947. Jean owned her own
fashion design business. When children came along, she shuttered her custom design business to
devote herself to her growing family. She did, however, continue to create and sew into her 90’s,
benefiting family, friends and a variety of charities.
A lifelong member of St. Michael’s the Archangel PNCC Church, Jean used her talents over the years to
teach Sunday School, sing in the choir, participate in many varied church fundraising activities and, in
her 90’s, was best known as the “Cake Lady” at the church’s Friday night Fish Fry.
Friends and family are invited to visitation on February 26, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at LaHayne
Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave, Hammond, IN. The funeral service will begin following visitation
at 1 p.m., with burial following immediately at St. Michael’s PNCC Cemetery, 169th Street in Hammond.
The service will be officiated by Very Reverend John P. Kowalczyk, Jr., Pastor, Saint Michael the
Archangel National Catholic Church.
