Vern E. Korlin, age 86, of Schererville, IN passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeanette (nee Wadiak); daughter, Donna Lynn (Roy) Cohen of Collierville, TN; grandson, Adam Korlin Cohen of Westerville, OH; granddaughter, Leigh Bryn Cohen of Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mina (nee Fricke) and Herman John Korlin, and sisters, Irene Harvey and Marjorie Thomas. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 5:30 PM from 1st United Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6705 Hohman Ave., Hammond, IN with Dr. Bassam Abdallah officiating. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Sunday from 2-5 PM at LaHayne Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond, IN. Vern was a lifetime resident of this area, a 1940 graduate of Hammond Tech High School, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He served for 20 years on the Hammond Police Dept, retiring as a Sergeant in 1966. Vern spent the next 14 years as Chief of Police of Purdue University, Calumet Campus, establishing the Police Force and creating the Campus Student Patrol, retiring in 1980. He was a member of 1st United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hammond, IN and Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #51.
