Verlyn W. Odell, age 77, of Hammond, IN passed away Sunday, May 30, 2010. He is survived by 1 daughter, Marilyn (Anthony Basile) Yassin-Basile of Hammond, IN; 1 granddaughter, Nadia Yassin of Merrillville, IN; 1 great grandson, Aidan Vy of Merrillville, IN; 1 brother, Donald O'Dell of Lowell, IN; 1 sister, Carol (Harold) Brewer of Clinton Township, MI; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Russell Odell. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 4, 2010 at 10 AM from St. John Lutheran Church, Randolph and Wentworth, Lansing, IL with Pastor Duane Fluechtling officiating. Burial will follow at Concordia Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday, June 3, 2010 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at LaHayne Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond, IN and Friday morning at the church from 9:30 AM until time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Hospice of the Calumet Area, 600 Superior Ave., Munster, IN 46321. Verlyn was a resident of this area for 74 years, a retired route man from ARA, a retired delivery man from State Line Pizza, past president of Northwest Indiana Athletic Assn., a member of the Hammond High Boosters and was active in softball and basketball at Hammond High School. He was an avid fan of old Cowboy movies of the 1930's and 1940's. Verlyn attended the Memphis Film Festival for over 40 years and was to receive an award at the festival on June 5, 2010.
