Theodore C. "Ted" Vieweg, age 86, of Munster, IN passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010. He is survived by 2 children, Kathy A. Vieweg of Chestnut Hill, MA and David E. Vieweg of Chandler, AZ; 4 grandchildren, Jessica Vieweg, Jayme Vieweg, Greg and Frankie Berger and Alexis Berger; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna Ruth Vieweg, on December 18, 2009. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 21, 2010 at 11 AM from Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7227 Hohman Ave., Hammond, IN with Pastor Karl Davies officiating. Burial will follow at Concordia Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 5-8 PM at LaHayne Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond, IN and Friday morning at the church from 10:30 AM until time of services. Ted began his first tour of duty in the United States Army on January 15, 1943 at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. As a combat Infantryman with the Company C, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, Pfc/Sergeant/ and eventual Technical Sergeant Ted Vieweg fought in Europe, beginning as a replacement in Normandy, throughout all of France and Central Europe, eventually ending up in Rhineland. He finally returned home with a date of separation from active duty of December 2, 1945. After readjusting to civilian life, becoming a married man and beginning to raise a family, Technical Sergeant Vieweg was recalled to active duty for the Korean War in 1950. As a Sergeant First Class with the 8th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division, Ted fought in the Pusan Perimeter, all the way up through to North Korea, past the 38th Parallel, near the Yalu River. He was finally discharged from the U.S. Army on September 7, 1951. Ted earned the following decorations during two dangerous and heroic tours of duty for his country: Bronze Star with on Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, ETO Campaign Medal with Four Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal with Two Loops, Meritorious Unit Medal, American Campaign Medal with German Bar, National Defense Service Medal, French Croix DeGuerre Avec Etoile De Bronze, Two Combat Infantry Badges (One for WW II and one for Korea) Korean Services Medal with Three Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a lifetime resident of this area, worked as a Plant Manager at LaSalle Steel Co and Allis-Chalmers, delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years with his wife , and was a huge Cubs and Bears fan. Ted was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hammond, IN, the Purple Heart Association and Munster VFW Post # 2697 who will conduct services at 6 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.
