Michael "Mickey" Sanders

Michael was born to an immigrant family from Hungary. He graduated from Hammond High School in 1945 and enlisted in the Marine Corps 1946. He received an honorable discharge in 1948. He was married to Donna Faye Dillner on December 10, 1949. She survives. He loved his career with the Hammond Fire Department and retired as assistant fire chief after 30 years of service. He then worked 10 years for School City of Munster. He was active member in the local Masons, McKinley Lodge No. 712 and was a former officer with the IAFF Local 556. He lived in Hammond much of his life but upon his retirement moved to his summer home on Kelsey Lake, Cassopolis, Michigan. He loved to boat, swim, and fish. After years of harsh Michigan winters, he became a "snow-bird," enjoying the hot and humid weather in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Preceding him in death was his mother Esther, father Mike, brother Joseph, sisters: Julie Malcomb, Esther Wallace, Alice Finch, and Margie Sanders. Surviving are his four children: Michael (Shari), Sandy Donato (Gene), Mark (Diane), Susan Greer (Ted); five grandchildren: Eric Sanders (Alicia), Jennifer Sanders, Cory Sanders (Michelle), Aaron Greer, and Sara Greer; eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 10:00 a.m. at LaHayne Funeral Home (6955 Southeastern Ave. Hammond, IN). Interment to follow at Concordia Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at LaHayne Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Michael may be made to American Cancer Society.
