Obituary

Mary Alyce Urick, CS entered eternal life on October 15, 2015. She was born on February 7, 1918 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Pearl Clinton Ensley and Marie Hancock Ensley. Shortly thereafter her brother Joseph was born. Their father passed away when she was four years old. Marie was remarried to E.T. Beattie, lovingly referred to as Daddy Beattie, who unfortunately passed away due to mustard gas injuries suffered in combat during World War I when Mary Alyce was still a young girl. A few years later Marie married Arthur Dolan. In 1929 John, their only child, was born. During the 1930's the family moved to Jamaica, Long Island, New York. As Marie's marriage dissolved, a strong bond developed with Mary Alyce's brothers which lasted throughout their lives. At age sixteen she dropped out of high school, completed her education at secretarial school, and then worked in an office to help support her family during the depths of the Great Depression. When Mary Alyce was twenty-three she attended a USO dance where she met Kenneth Urick, a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard. The date was December 6, 1941, the day before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Five weeks later on January 15, 1942 they were married at The Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. Soon after they moved to Philadelphia, PA. where Kenneth was stationed. As World War II was nearing an end, their first child Robert, was born in late November 1944. In 1945, Kenneth was serving in Hawaii awaiting orders to proceed to Japan when the war ended with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With Kenneth discharged from the service they began their post-war life in Milford, Connecticut where he became a sales representative in the early days of the recreational boating industry. During that time Mary Alyce, a devout Christian Scientist, was very active in her church, where she served and worshipped throughout her life. In 1949 she gave birth to her second child, Bonnie. That same year Robert contracted polio and was hospitalized for nine months. Mary Alyce's faith and perseverance carried her family through this very difficult time. During the 1950's Mary Alyce was a dedicated housewife and mother as Kenneth's occupation necessitated moves to Rhode Island, Michigan, and eventually Elkhart, Indiana in early 1961. Mary Alyce and Kenneth enjoyed many happy times bonding and socializing with the new friends they met along the way. They loved dancing together and spending time with their children. Mary Alyce supplemented the family income, working in various positions, including those as secretary and bank teller. In 1967 Mary Alyce's continuing study in Christian Science culminated in her becoming a Christian Science practitioner. She was honored to be listed in the Christian Science Journal for over 40 years. Many people were helped and comforted through her efforts. The period from 1961 to 1984 represented the longest time during which Mary Alyce lived continually in one place. In early 1977 Kenneth passed away suddenly and a new journey began: In 1984 she moved to Camp Hill, PA to live near her daughter Bonnie. While living there, contact was established with Willard "Woody" Woodward. Woody and his late wife Arlene shared many happy times with the Urick family, dating from the 1940's. Their renewed friendship blossomed and they married in 1988. They moved to a senior community in Toms River, NJ and enjoyed a very active life together. Mary Alyce especially loved to golf and participated in a women's golf league. At age 78 she shot the first of two holes-in-one. While in Toms River she took up walking, averaging three miles a day. Following Woody's passing in 1999 she moved back to Elkhart, the place she considered her true home. In September 2006, following an injury at home, Mary Alyce moved to Spring Hills at Mount Vernon, an assisted living facility in Alexandria, VA., near Bonnie. And in January 2014 she moved to Brentwood at Hobart, IN near Robert. During these years her faith, kindness, and spirit were an inspiration to all whose lives she touched. It was our blessing to be her children and her treasured legacy continues through her family: Robert Urick (Anna), and Bonnie Senft, her grandchildren, Thomas Urick (Nicole), Brian Senft (Katrina), Lindsey Scampone (Andrew), and step-grandchildren Barbara Senft (Bruce), Tricia Senft (Ricki), Christy Senft (Mitch) and great grandchildren Emma, Katherine, Mya, Anthony, and step-great grandchildren Austin, Hunter, Michael, Samantha, and Matthew. "She who remains in the hearts of those left behind never dies." The family wishes to express their profound appreciation for the loving care provided by the dedicated staffs at Brentwood at Hobart and Ascera Hospice of Valparaiso. Pursuant to Mary Alyce's wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Ascera Hospice or The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, MA. Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to LaHAYNE FUNERAL HOME, 6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond. For further information regarding arrangements, please contact LAHAYNE FUNERAL HOME at 219-845-3600.
