Marcella E. Clutter (nee Portman), age 95, of Hammond, Indiana, passed away on September 9, 2025.
She was born December 30, 1929, in Louisville, Kentucky to Thomas Leonard and Agnes Portman. Marcella graduated from Whiting High School, Class of 1948. Go Oilers! On August 19, 1950, she married Paul Clutter, who preceded her in death, but not before being married over 70 years. Marcella retired from The School City of Hammond after working for many years at Gavit Jr/Sr High School. Marcella was a long-time member of the Lacare Art League. Throughout her life she created many ceramic, textile, needlepoint and other works of art that she generously shared with her family and friends. Marcella enjoyed many interests including traveling and reading, but one of her main interests was Genealogy. Marcella created a Book of Life tracing the roots of the Portman/Tunstall families back over 300 years. Surviving family members cherish this book and will forever be grateful for Aunt Marcy's generosity.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; and brother, Joseph Portman. Survivors include her son, Kevin; sisters: Shirley K. Hurt and Mary T. Pulliam; dearest cousin, Bradley (Donna) Barton; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation and Services will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at LaHayne Funeral Home located at 6955 Southeastern Avenue, Hammond, IN 46324. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 9:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 12:00 PM with Pastor Pete Ward of Hope United Methodist Church Officiating. Burial will follow to Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Hammond Public Library and the Whiting Historical Society.
