Obituary

Lois Wilson Sherby-Stromberger of Hammond, Indiana, passed away July 2, 2010. Lois was born September 23, 1918 to Darcy and Alma (Hallberg) Wilson in Hammond. Being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was her great joy. Lois's faith, family, friends and service to others were the priorities of her life. She loved to cook and entertain and she was a wonderful seamstress. Lois graduated from Hammond High School in 1935 and was retired from the School City of Hammond where she served as secretary for Morton Elementary School for many years. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as both elder and deacon. She was a long-time member of the Hammond Women's Club and was a past president. Lois was a life member of PTA. She was a past president of the Porter Elementary School PTA and was the first president of the Jefferson Elementary School PTA. Lois was also an active member of the Hammond Historical Society, the Retired School Secretaries organization, the AP chapter of PEO, and the Lois Club. In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by husband Robert J. Sherby (1992), husband Kenneth W. Stromberger (2006), sister Lenore (John) Melton, and step-sons Kenneth W. Stromberger, Jr. and John Stromberger. Lois is survived by her children Joan M. (David) Zaun of Bonita Springs, FL; James W. (Kathy) Sherby of Clayton, MO; Ellen (Edward) Swift of Redwood City, CA and step-children Suzanne (Frank) Fliszar of Scottsdale, AZ; Shari Stromberger (wife of the late John Stromberger) of Crown Point, IN; Robert (Gia) Stomberger of San Juan Capistrano, CA; and Thomas (Sherie) Gilbert of Michigan City, IN. In addition Lois is survived by grandchildren Laura (David) Taylor, Brad (Natalie) Zaun, Michael, William and David Sherby, Mark (April) Swift, David (Amy) Swift, Julie (Jeremy) Hartshorn and step-grandchildren Martha Stromberger, Shaun Stromberger, Steve (Angela) Stromberger, Evan Stromberger, Michelle (Patrick) Hachey, Scott (Megan) Gilbert, Roger (Johnna) Gilbert, Keith (Kristy) Gilbert and great- grandchildren Rachel, Claire and Jackson Taylor; Anna and Matthew Zaun; Kendra, Payton, Judah and Gabriel Swift; Emily, Ethan and Shepard Hartshorn and step-great-grandchildren Bailey Stromberger; Ian, Jacob and Olivia Hachey; Reece and Mason Gilbert; Tommy and Sarah Gilbert; and Robert Gilbert. Also surviving Lois are her nieces and nephews: Carl (Lorraine) Melton, Marie (Elza) Allen, Tom (Mary Ann) Sherby, Nancy Morgado, Beth (Fred) Wassilak, Linda Higbee, and Barbara (R. J.) Bregenzer. A celebration of life service will be conducted on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the First Presbyterian Church, 6021 Hohman Avenue, Hammond, Indiana, officiated by Pastor Linda Skaggs. Family and friends can gather beginning at 10:00 AM in the church prior to the service.
