Obituary

With heavy hearts and deep respect, we remember and honor the life of Larry D. Martin, who passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, in Hammond, Indiana, at the age of 77. Larry was born on May 12, 1949, in East Chicago, Indiana, where his journey began and where he built a legacy of dedication, hard work, and enduring love for his family.

Larry was a proud graduate of Hammond High School, Class of 1967. After completing his education, he answered the call to serve and became a Marine Veteran, giving his strength and commitment to his country—an enduring point of pride throughout his life.

Following his service, Larry embarked on a distinguished career at Inland Steel, where his devotion and work ethic were well known. He retired after an impressive 30 years as the #7 Blast Furnace Electrical Foreman, a role through which he guided others and left a lasting impact on those who worked alongside him.

Larry’s zest for life was evident in his love for bowling, golf, and working on cars. These passions reflected both his spirited nature and his keen problem-solving abilities. Whether on the lanes, the green, or with a wrench in hand, Larry approached each challenge with enthusiasm and camaraderie.

Family was always at the center of Larry’s world. He is survived by his beloved son, Chris Martin, who carries forward his father’s legacy. His siblings: Wanda Straker (and her husband Ron), Sandra Jones (and her husband Don), Allen Martin (and his wife Donna Stone), and Patricia Martin; and his uncle Don (Joyce) Huckabay, will forever cherish the memories they created together. Larry’s four precious grandchildren: Lindsey, Brady, Abigail, and Chloe, were a continual source of joy and pride for him, bringing light and laughter to his later years.

In remembrance, we also honor those who predeceased Larry: his parents: Lawrence and Margaret (nee Huckabay) Martin; his son, Nathan Martin; and his brother Phillip Martin. Their memories remain closely held in the hearts of those who loved them.

Throughout his years, Larry touched many lives with his kindness, wisdom, and steadfast loyalty. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
