George Karnafel, age 91, US Army Veteran of WWII, of Hammond, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Wednesday, January 1, 2014. Proud uncle of numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Cherished brother of late William Karnafel, late Peter (late Rose) Karnafel, late Metro (late Ethel) Karnafel, late John Karnafel, late Ann (late Walter) Czerwonka, late Mary (late George) Langlois, late Michael (Catherine) Karnafel, late Harriet Sophie (late Henry) Tarkington, and late Esther Karnafel Devoted son of late Vasil and late Helena Karnafel nee Kornafel. George was a proud veteran who was the recipient of the Purple Heart and 6 Bronze Stars during his time in Germany in WWII where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He also received the European Theater Ribbon. He was a past officer and a 62 year member of the American Legion Post 369 East Chicago. George was a world traveler whose pass port was full. He was retired from Allis Chalmers. Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at LaHAYNE FUNERAL HOME, 6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond, IN with Father Mark Pavlina officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Family and friends are invited to meet with the family on Saturday, January 4, 2014 from 9:30 AM until time of Service at 11 AM.
