George W. Elkins, age 92, of Munster, IN passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010. He is survived by 2 daughters, Janet (Howard) Cooper of Munster, IN and Patricia (Kent) Hinebaugh of Fort Myers, FL; 4 grandchildren, Eric and Alex Hinebaugh of Fort Myers, FL and Adam and Aaron Cooper of Munster, IN; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite, parents, Wesley and Ida Elkins, 3 brothers, Arthur, Elmer, and Robert Elkins, and 1 sister, Grace Gretz. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 10 AM from LaHayne Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond, IN with Pastor Karl Davies officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 from 5-8 PM at the funeral home. George was a lifetime resident of this area and retired from Inland Steel Co. with 36 years of service. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hammond, IN, 25-Year Club at Inland Steel, Hammond Historical Society, and the 448 Bomb Group Association. George was a B-24 Pilot in the US Air Force during WW2, a member of the 152nd Infantry, 38th Division, and a recipient of the Purple Heart.
