Obituary

Frank N. Kotlarz, Sr., of Hammond, Indiana, passed away on August 24, 2026, at the age of 86. He was born on November 15, 1939, in Hammond.

Frank built a long career with the City of Hammond, where he began as a mechanic and retired as a Foreman. His working life reflected dedication, skill, and pride in doing a job well. He was also well known for his love of motorsports, having been a former race car driver at Illiana Speedway in Schererville, Indiana, and Raceway Park in Blue Island, Illinois. Beyond the track, he was an avid NASCAR fan who loved fishing and enjoyed life as a HAM radio operator, known by his call sign N9DLR.

Above all, Frank will be remembered by those who knew and loved him best. He is survived by his son, Frank “Frankie” Kotlarz, Jr. and his wife, Paula; his daughters: Karen Szczudlo and her husband, Bob; and Diane Hajduk and her husband, Mike. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Bobby and his wife, Jessica; Johnny; and Kelly and her husband Robert; as well as his great grandchildren: Khloey, Lucas, Mateo, Evalyn and Tommy; and numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward the memory of his life and love. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Devaris.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith Kotlarz (nee Behrens), with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Pauline Kotlarz, and by his sister, Sandra Palumbo.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 3:00 PM. to 7:00 PM at La Hayne Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave, Hammond, Indiana 46324. A funeral service will be held there on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 10:00 AM with Deacon Jim Renwick officiating, followed by burial at Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, Indiana.

Frank’s life was marked by hard work, family devotion, and the pursuits he truly enjoyed. He will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
