Erna Yarck, born April 4, 1920, in Hammond, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, in Valparaiso, Indiana at the age of 106. She was a beloved woman whose life was marked by warmth, kindness, and a profound dedication to her faith and family.
A lifelong Christian, Erna faithfully attended the chapel service every Saturday at Valparaiso Care and Rehab, where her presence was cherished by all who knew her. Known for her “heart of gold,” Erna’s affectionate nature and sweet disposition touched the lives of many. Blessed with a long life, she woke every day determined to do whatever she could and to maintain her health. It was not uncommon to visit her and be asked to wait a moment while she finished, “taking my exercise”.
Erna's hobbies reflected her patient and creative spirit. She delighted in working on jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, drawing and coloring, sewing, and spending time visiting with friends and loved ones. These pastimes not only occupied her hands but enriched her soul, allowing her to express her thoughtful and caring nature.
She is survived by a devoted circle of family who hold her memory dearly: her grandniece, Martha Walker nee Morton; grandnephews: Brian Morton (and wife Rose) and Michael Morton; great grandniece, Natalie Walker; niece, Paulette Lange (widow of Edward); and grandnieces: Kimberly Salisbury and Debra McCormick. Each carries forward Erna’s legacy of love and generosity.
Erna was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Anna Yarck, and her siblings: brothers, Frank Yarck and Herbert Yarck, sisters, Louise Lange and Alma Christian. She also mourned the loss of her niece, Donna Mae Morton (wife of Bruce Morton), and of her grandnephew, Bruce E. Morton. These precious family members remain forever in her heart.
Friends and community members are invited to honor Erna’s life at La Hayne Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave, Hammond, IN 46324. Visitation will be held on June 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at Noon, officiated by Pastor Eric Kleinschmidt. Interment will follow to Oak Hill Cemetery in Hammond.
Erna Yarck lived a life rich in love, faith, and grace. She will be remembered as a loving and gentle soul whose kindness and devotion left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know her. Her memory will continue to inspire those who cherish her, and her spirit will remain a guiding light to her family and community.
