At the age of 15, Eleanor knew Fred was the man of her dreams when she saw him walking down the street in his Army Air Force uniform. When he returned from the war, they immediately got married in August 1945. They were married over 70 years. After the war, Eleanor worked for Goldblatts, the largest department store in Indiana. In the late 1940s, she worked for Illinois Bell as a telephone operator. Eleanor spent most of the 1950s working at the Knoerzer Cadillac dealership in Hammond. Eleanor's most challenging job was raising her daughter, Susan, which was a full-time effort until her departure to Purdue. In 1979 Eleanor joined Sterns Hardware in Hammond as their bookkeeper and as a team member interacting with customers. Eleanor was a talented artist, seamstress, cook, and businesswoman. As early as the 1960s, she followed the stock market daily and worked closely with Fred on financial decisions. She and Fred were adventurous spirits traveling to every state in the mainland towing their beloved Airstream. Upon the birth of their two grandchildren, Lauren and Alex, they devoted themselves to spending many months in Colorado. The influence Eleanor had on their lives is tremendous. She was their angel and their biggest fan until her death.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Munster, Indiana; Wounded Warriors or to the Denver Animal Shelter from where Eleanor's precious cat, Ella, was adopted 3 years ago.
