Douglas E. Smith, age 76, of Hammond, passed away Thursday, March 09, 2017. He is survived by his daughters, Victoria (Thomas) Solon, Michelle Berumen, and Lori Ann (Mark) Thursby. Grandchildren, Hannah and Paige Solon, Nicole Dongu, Ryan (Fiancé Rachel) Berumen, Daniel (Fiancé Kelly) Berumen. Great Grandchildren, Makayla, Madison, and Savannah, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years Sharon. His brothers William, Lyndall, and Buster. Sisters Virginia and Billie and his special fur babies Bo, Terry, and Bear. Doug was born in Cleaton, Kentucky to Herbert and Hazel Smith. He was known as the "maintenance man" having worked for the Hammond Housing Authority for 30 plus years. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden; listening to country music and the blues especially Ray Charles; having a few beers with his friends on Friday nights and spending time with his family. After battling and overcoming cancer 15 years ago, Doug continued to live his life on his terms, doing what he wanted, when he wanted. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Friends are invited to celebrate Doug's life with his family on Sunday, March 12, 2017 for a Visitation from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at LaHAYNE FUNERAL HOME , 6955 Southeastern Avenue, Hammond, Indiana. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 13, 2017 also at LaHAYNE FUNERAL HOME with Chaplain Frank Klobucar officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, Indiana.
