Obituary

Billie Wayne Nelson Sr., age 68, of Hammond, Indiana, passed away December 22, 2025. He was born on January 4, 1957, at St. Catherine's Hospital in East Chicago.

Bill was a lifelong resident of the Hammond area and attended Hammond Technical Vocational High School. He spent many of his professional years working as an Electric Motor Mechanic, a career that reflected his strong work ethic, mechanical skill, dedication, and was often referred to as the numbers man. He had a unique talent to memorize the birthdates, phone numbers, addresses, anniversaries, and even license plates of family and friends. After retiring, he continued doing what he loved most, which was watching sports, engaging with others, and enjoying life on his own terms.

Bill had a deep love for fast cars, cruising and could often be found fixing, tinkering, or offering advice under the hood. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching football, basketball, baseball, and he never missed a chance to cheer for his favorite teams. Most of all he was an Elvis Presley fan, Bill proudly shared movie quotes, sang songs, and would sometimes dress like the King and perform, bringing cheers, smiles and laughter to those around him. He also loved old western movies and truly believed in living life to the fullest.

Above all, Bill cherished his family. He is survived by Elsa Kaszowicz; his loving sister, Jo Ann Parker; and his children: Billie Nelson Jr. (Kristina Nelson), Misty Nelson (James York), Elvis Nelson (Deborah Nelson); and father figure to Melissa Kaszowicz . He was a proud grandfather to Alexa (Kelsey) Nelson, Austin Nelson, Christian (Arika) Martin, Jilian York, Tyler Nelson, Haley Nelson, Autumn Nelson, Brooke Nelson, Chase Nelson, Oliver York; and uncle to Michael Parker and Michelle Parker; all of whom held a special place in his heart.

Bill was preceded in death by his grandparents Clarence and Hattie Shewbart Nelson and parents Hollis Roy and Inez Mitchell Nelson.

He will be remembered for his big personality, generous spirit, love of music, quick wit, and the joy he brought to those who knew him. His memory will live on through the stories shared, the laughter remembered, and the family he loved so deeply.
