Albert "Al the People's Pal" G. Emond, Sr., age 89, US Army Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, of Hammond, passed away Friday, September 15, 2017.
Beloved Husband for 64 years to Barbara "Bobbie" M. Emond nee Matovina. Loving Father of Cathy (Barry) Roach, Albert (Mona) Emond, Jr., David Emond, Jeffrey (Cindy) Emond, and Janet (Moose) Pawloski. Proud Grandpa of 4 and Great-Grandpa of 4. Fond Uncle of many Nieces and Nephews. Preceded in death by his Parents Wesley and Bertha Emond nee Robillard, his Sisters Helen (late George) Tonkovich, Veda Gavura, Evelyn (late Bob) Kramer, and Dorothy (late Bruno "Jiggs") Lipka.
Al enlisted in the US Army in February of 1946 as an Army Medic where he served on the Hospital Ship US Comfort in the South Pacific. He reenlisted with the Army in 1949 with Infantry 7th Division with the occupation of Japan and 1 year during the Korean War. Al received 5 Battle Star's and was discharged in 1952 as a Staff Sergeant with the Army Infantry. Al graduated in 1945 from East Chicago Washington High School in Indiana. He was a member of the Hammond Police Department from 1956 to 1979 and retired as a Detective Lieutenant. He attended the University of Louisville, Kentucky, Case Western University, and the Ohio FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He served as Chief Probation Officer and Bailiff in the Crown Point Criminal Court Division II. He belonged to the Hammond FOP Lodge No. 51 and the Calumet Ridge Moose Lodge No. 1258 in Schererville. Al was also a member of the VFW Haan W. G. General Post No. 3029 and the American Legion East Chicago Allied Post 369. He was a member of the Hammond Civic Center Senior Citizens Fitness Center and Wellness Walkers of Highland, Indiana. Al met the love of his life Bobbie and has been dancing with her for the last 65 years. Al was known for his witty sense of humor and joke telling.
